A few months ago, in September, I was driving the Mustang back from Ms. Adventure’s in Raleigh. And on I-40 I noticed that the breaks were not nearly as responsive as they had been.
Not ok.
Thankfully I made it home ok but decided to check the break fluid before driving it again. The next weekend revealed that not only was the break fluid low and in need of replacement but air had also made it into the line. Well, I had been planning on bleeding the lines anyway.
It took a couple weeks but while bleeding the break lines two weekends later, there was a sudden, breaking, metal metal sound from the rear, passenger brake. Hmm, that doesn’t sound right. And now brake fluid is flowing freely from that brake. That’s definitely not right. So I opened up the brake to find the spacer way out of place, with some teeth missing, and the wheel cylinder in two pieces.
Sigh.
Another trip to the parts store and a couple more weeks but at the end of that I managed to swap out the wheel cylinder and reattached the brake line. The wheel cylinder ended up being much easier than expected but I was still pretty proud of myself for finishing it.
My brother-in-law put in the new spacer and put the brakes back together, since he was the one that had worked on them with previously. He also finished bleeding the lines, changed the brake fluid, and changed the oil as a Mea Culpa.
She been running great since. Yesterday I ran her down to Carthage, NC and back and she loved running full out on the open road. And no brake surprises. 😅😜
